Twinning project on public procurement presented

The statement was made by representatives of the European Commission Delegation to Croatia and the Ministry of the Economy, Labour and Enterprise at a presentation of a Phare 2005 twinning project aimed at strengthening administrative capacities for the implementation of new public procurement legislation

ZAGREB, (Hina) - Transparency in public procurement on the domestic market prepares business people for an effective entry into the European market, and promoting transparency reduces the possibility of fraud and corruption, a conference heard in Zagreb on Tuesday.

The statement was made by representatives of the European Commission Delegation to Croatia and the Ministry of the Economy, Labour and Enterprise at a presentation of a Phare 2005 twinning project aimed at strengthening administrative capacities for the implementation of new public procurement legislation.

The project is worth more than 185,000 euros and will be completed in the autumn. The twinning partner is the Hungarian Public Procurement Council.

The state secretary at the Croatian Economy Ministry, Tamara Obradovic Mazal, and the first secretary of the EC Delegation, Constantino Longares Barrio, highlighted the importance of a transparent public procurement system in the fight against corruption, and underlined that one of the goals of the project was to help prepare Croatian business people for the European market.

Also in attendance were Croatia's chief state prosecutor, Mladen Bajic, the chief of the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime, Dinko Cvitan, Hungarian Ambassador Peter Gyorkos, Croatian Employers Association director Djuro Popijac, and representatives of the Croatian Chamber of the Economy, companies, and non-governmental organisations.
